At Home With PRC, Episode 49

Today, we focus on applying spin on serves.  In the video and in this narrative, we assume the server and receiver are right handed.  Use the continental grip.  To impart slice, your racquet should travel in a 9 to 3 o’clock path.  This will be effective when serving wide on the deuce side and to the T on the ad side.   To serve wide on the ad side or T on the deuce side, you would be hitting more of the 9 o’clock side of the ball.  Both wide serve should cross the sideline before the service line.   Topspin is created by brushing up on the ball in a 7:1 path and then continuing on the 9 o’clock side of the ball.  This is achieved by tossing the ball slightly behind you.  Topspin is a great 2nd serve, because 1) the ball travels over the net higher and then spins down into the box and then 2) kicks up higher to the receiver’s backhand.  Practice shadowing the different motions and visualize your aces!
